New Research: How do European police forces deal with (violent) disturbances by non-institutionalized protest groups?

A study by Don Weenink (UvA) & Laura Keesman (RUG)

Researchers of NSCR and the University of Amsterdam analyzed video footage of encounters between police officers and citizens in Amsterdam. The research focuses on citizen demeanor and how a bad attitude influences the use of force by officers. The outcomes show that citizen lawful but rude or hostile demeanor matters, but not as much as aggressive and criminal behavior.

Dr. Laura Keesman defended her PhD thesis entitled Being in Control. Policing Bodies, Emotions and Violence at the University of Amsterdam.

Laura Keesman has been appointed Assistant Professor in Sociology at University of Groningen as of November 1st.
