Rene Tuma
I am sociologist currently working at the Department of Sociology at Technische Universität Berlin. In 2020 I have been working as a PostDoc with the GroupViolence research programme. I am continuing the cooperation with the group as an associated researcher.
I am especially interested in understanding the social and communicative forms of violent encounters. I apply methods of video analysis that have a foundation in ethnomethodology and (multimodal) conversation analysis. By this very detailed reconstructions of violent trajectories, and turning points allow for insights into the situative organisation of violent interactions. Sociological theory, especially sociology of knowledge extends this approach by incorporating the institutional embeddedness into cultural contexts.
Prior to this research, I have published on videographic methods for social sciences. I am especially interested in the reflexive study of how interpretation of video data is achieved in academic practice as well as in ‘vernacular’ application in professional fields such as police work.
